What is WordPress Calypso?

WordPress Calypso is the new interface to the WordPress Content Management System. It uses a REST API powered by PHP and MySQL.

Calypso itself is built with JavaScript both on the Server and Clientside. The server side application is a lightweight Node.js bootstrap for the browser application built largely with the React user interface library from Facebook.

The old WordPress CMS is not being replaced by Calypso in the near future. For now it remains as a content management facade for the venerable blogging tool built with the LAMP stack.

In the future WordPress may update the storage engine, but the details and schedule remain unknown.
